Gagan Toor (Indian) wins NASA contest to Name Mercury Crater
Gagan Toor, an Indian was one among the five winners who won the contest held by NASA between Dec. 15 and Jan. 15 to name five identified craters on Mercury and his suggested name for naming a crater was ‘Enheduanna’. Toor chose the name after Enheduanna, a princess of the Sumerian city of Ur in ancient Mesopotamia (modrn Iraq and Kuwait), the first known poet and author.
Enheduanna including four other names Karsh, Carolan, Kulthum and Rivera — have been selected to name five craters on Mercury by International Astronomical Union (IAU)
The International Astronomical Union (IAU) made the selections from a total of 3600 submissions from which 17 names were made to the semifinals and finally from which 5 made to the finals.
There were thousands of entries and the IAU kept a rule that the name should be after an artist, composer or a writer who was famous for over 50 years and died at least three years ago. The newly selected crater names are Carolan, Enheduanna, Karsh, Kulthum, and Rivera.
Turlough O'Carolan (Carolan) was an Irish composer during the late 16th and early 17th centuries; Enheduanna, an Akkadian princess who lived in the Sumerian city of Ur in ancient Mesopotamia (modern Iraq and Kuwait), and is regarded by many scholars as the earliest known author and poet; Umm Kulthum was an Egyptian singer, songwriter, and film actress active between the 1920s and 1970s; and Diego Rivera was a prominent Mexican painter and muralist between the 1920s and 1950s; Yousuf Karsh was an Armenian–Canadian and one of the greatest portrait photographers of the 20th century;
The winning suggestions came from different countries all around the world. Carolan was suggested by Fergal Donnelly (Belguim), Joseph Brusseau (USA), and Deane Morrison (USA). Enheduanna was submitted by Gagan Toor (India). Kulthum was suggested by Molouk Ba-Isa (Saudi Arabia), Riana Rakotoarimanana (Switzerland), Yehya Hassouna (USA), David Suttles (USA), Thorayya Said Giovannelli (USA), and Matt Giovannelli (USA). Rivera was suggested by Ricardo Martinez (Mexico), Rebecca Hare (USA), Arturo Gutierrez (Mexico), and José Martinez (USA). Karsh was submitted by Elizabeth Freeman Rosenzweig (USA).
These final 5 winners were announced just few hours before the NASA's Messenger spacecraft was expected to crash onto the surface of Mercury, ending the probe's four-year observation of the rocky planet.

The Messenger, which captured stunning pictures of Mercury's cratered surface, crashed into the surface of the planet at 1926 GMT on April 30.
