5 Mistakes to avoid while preparing for CAT Exam

Common Admission Test (CAT) is one of the most unanticipated entrance exams in India for aspirants seeking admission in IIMs and other B-Schools that are accepting the CAT score. CAT exam demands months of preparation and considering the level of competition even a single mistake can cost aspirants a lot.

Every year more than 2 lakh aspirants appear for CAT for about 2000 seats in the IIMs. This is about 1% of the total candidates who appear for the exam. Thus, it is quite evident that there is no room for any mistakes and candidates should be thoroughly prepared before the examination.

But sometimes aspirants are so concerned about covering the whole CAT syllabus, solving CAT previous year papers and counting the days left for the exam that they forget and ignore the mistakes that they do. A good strategy and months of preparation would go in vain if aspirants end up making silly mistakes. So here is the list of 5 mistakes that aspirants should avoid while preparing for CAT exam.

CAT-preparation

Not following timetables

One of the most important components while preparing for any competitive exam is following a well-planned timetable. Most aspirants work hard but they do not prepare a daily or weekly timetable they should follow. Every CAT aspirant should plan a study timetable and follow it strictly.

Too many study materials

There are thousands of books for CAT preparation in the market. But candidates should choose the right preparation book for them. Most candidates get puzzled and take on multiple reference books which lead them to a lot of confusion. Therefore, candidates must select limited study materials to avoid mix up of the concepts.

Not practicing CAT question papers

Practice makes everyone perfect. Practicing CAT sample papers and CAT previous years question papers is one of the best ways to prepare for the exam. Candidates should practice section wise questions of subjects like reading comprehension for CAT, verbal ability, quantitative aptitude, reasoning, and data interpretation. Solving CAT question paper will give candidates an idea about the question pattern and difficulty level of the questions. It will also help in increasing the speed and accuracy of the candidate.

Not having conceptual clarity

By memorizing formulas and shortcut techniques, no one can master CAT exam. Aspirants should always remember that the only way to excel in CAT is by gaining conceptual clarity in every section of the CAT syllabus. It is advised that candidates distinctly understand all the concepts and principles before solving questions of that section. They should clear all their doubts by discussing them with their teachers and mentors.

Last minute mugging

Candidates should remember that the things which were not done in so many months cannot be done in few minutes. They should try to keep away from books and notes in the last minutes before the exam. They should think positive and good stuff. Keeping their mind relaxed and tension free can give them a lot of positive energy.

These were some of the common mistakes that most aspirants make while preparing for CAT. They should try to avoid these mistakes which can help them to score a higher percentile in the examination.
