New Section In Motor Vehicles Act Will Make You Think Before Breaking Traffic Rules
Traffic rules are always considered as a joke in India. Nowadays traffic rules became more strict and fines are being imposed. Already specific directions were given to the road transport ministry to seek a wider role for states in the ongoing consultations for a new legislation that will replace the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 is modified and it has some new rules and regulations. Now, a new section has been added to the Motor Vehicles Act by a group of state transport ministers to stringent the rules against those who break the traffic laws.
The new section includes the following rules. in Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
#1. Suspension of Driving Licence:
Speeding, rash driving, jumping traffic signals, drunk & drive, using mobile phones while driving and not wearing a helmet may result in on-the-spot suspension of driving licences.
#2. First-Time Offenders:
Rs 5,000 or six months jail for first-time offenders, while for the subsequent offence, there would be two years jail or Rs 10,000 fine.
#3. Driving Without Insurance:
Driving without insurance could attract Rs 2,000 fine and three months jail for first offence and Rs 4,000 fine on subsequent offences. Crash victims will be liable for compensation if they are hit by an uninsured vehicle.
#4. Drivers Who Fail to Take crash victims to Hospital:
The Higher penalty will be imposed on drivers who fail to take crash victims to hospitals, in cases where they face no mob fury. Fine of Rs 2,000 or jail term of up to six months has been proposed for such drivers.
#5. Advertisements With Adequate Warning:
Immediate withdrawal of advertisements, films and TV serials that show speeding and rash driving without “adequate warning” on the screen.
#6. Construction and Maintenance of Vehicles:
Neither individuals, dealer or body builders interfere with construction and maintenance of vehicles, the GoM has proposed Rs 5,000 and up to Rs 1 lakh fine respectively.
According to a Times of India report, the road transport ministry has pitched for a ten-fold increase in fines and stringent punishment for traffic violations. Violating, transgressing or disrespecting any of these rules is a serious offence as according to the city-specific traffic police rules as well as the Indian Motor Vehicle Act.
